Tonya D. McDaniel assumed the position of County Commissioner for District A in 2018, having been elected to the role. Hailing from Winston-Salem and raised in a military family with roots in Ft. Jackson, S.C., she pursued her undergraduate studies at Winston-Salem State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a minor in Public Administration. Later, in 2016, she obtained a Masters in Public Administration from North Carolina Central University.

During her tenure as county commissioner, Tonya McDaniel has been steadfast in her efforts to promote equity in property tax rates and county funding for the school systems within District A. She diligently oversees the budget to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents, reaffirming her love for the community and her unwavering commitment to its advancement.

Being the god-daughter of the esteemed late Earline Parmon, a renowned community leader who served as a Forsyth County commissioner, state representative, and state senator, McDaniel felt inspired to follow in her footsteps. Running for county commissioner, she aimed to ensure equity and fair distribution of resources for District A.

Tonya McDaniel's involvement in public service goes beyond her role as county commissioner. She has contributed her expertise to the North Carolina State Health Coordinating Council, where she played a role in guiding the development of the State Medical Facilities Plan, having been appointed by Governor Roy Cooper. Additionally, she has actively served on various committees, including the National Association of Counties (NACo) Veterans & Military Services Committee and the Forsyth County Home & Community Block Grant Advisory Council.

A distinguished member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Nu Tau Zeta Chapter, McDaniel has held several leadership positions within the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County NAACP Chapter and the Forsyth County African American Caucus with community involvement spanning across various groups and associations, all dedicated to making a positive impact.

Beyond her professional and community engagements, Tonya McDaniel finds joy in spending time with her family, including her three children and three grandchildren. During her leisure time, she enjoys participating in Zumba and engaging in friendly Scrabble matches.
