Get Help with Winter Heating Costs through the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP)

The Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) helps eligible families pay their heating bills during the winter months. This one-time payment is issued directly to your heating provider to help cover your heating expenses.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for LIEAP, your household must be considered vulnerable because of high heating costs. You may be eligible if your heat source is billed individually, and you are facing rising heating expenses.

Eligibility and Important Dates

  • Starting December 1st: Households with someone aged 60 or older, or with a person who has a disability receiving services through the Division of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS), can apply starting December 1st. Disabilities include those that qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Administration (SSA), or Veterans Administration (VA) disability benefits.
  • Starting January 2nd: All other households can apply starting January 2nd.

How Much Help Can You Get?

The amount of assistance depends on the size of your household and income. Eligible households can receive $300, $400, or $500 paid directly to your heating provider.

What Do You Need to Apply?

To help process your application quickly, please provide:
  • A copy of your heating bill, including the account number.
  • Proof of income received in the month before you apply (for example, if applying in January, provide income information from December).
  • Other verifications may be required.
