The Trailblazers 4-H Club continues to “blaze a trail”. We have been very busy this Spring starting with our May 4-H Club Meeting by making three kinds of blueberry cobbler. We made one using frozen blueberries, one using fresh blueberries & one using canned blueberries. We got to taste all three and vote on which one we liked best. We found out that it is cheapest to go to a farm & pick your own berries. We were split on votes of which berries tasted best. Our club is working on being certified through the Junior Master Gardener's Healthy Eating from the Garden Handbook.
During our club meeting we potted flowers into hand decorated flower pots. We gave these to the residents at Kerner Ridge Assisted Living the following week. While we were at Kerner Ridge, we held our monthly program; the residents always enjoy a visit from the Trailblazers---and we enjoy our visit with them! After the program, several 4-H’ers planted flowers in the courtyard for all the residents to enjoy.
We also went on a field trip to the Carolina Raptor Center in Hendersonville, NC. We watched a demonstration on several raptors---from very small to VERY large. We were also able to watch the Bald Eagles in their habitat---everyone was excited to see the Bald Eagles. (Did you know they are not really bald?) My favorite raptor was the albino red tailed hawk. He gets whiter every time he molts.
Several of our members were able to attend a field trip to a local farm. We got to help catch the lambs and baby goats. The farmer showed us how to trim and care for their hooves and she gave them their shots to prevent them from getting tetanus and other diseases that could kill them. The lambs were so fuzzy and sweet! We also got to walk around the orchard and learn about many of the different fruit trees and plants.
We also went to Kerner Ridge for a game day. Fifteen residents joined the Trailblazers for a fun time of board games.
